Abstract
The objective of this study is to analyze the knee rotation motion accompanying knee flexion/extension, to examine the reason why a knee rotates by the flexion/extension/ It is generally known that tibia rotates internally/externally when knee flex/extend respectively, and that a knee which is flexibly rotate can flex deeply. We built the knee motion simulator activated by muscle forces. Inputting the positions of insertions of the medial/lateral hamstrings and their muscle forces, we bended the knee simulator and measured the rotation angle. The prosthesis to be analyzed was Complete Flexion Knee, Japan Medical Material Co., which is now developing to be capable of deep knee flexion. As a result, we introduced that the medical and lateral hamstrings forces drove medial and lateral rotation respectively. We also succeeded to observe the rotation attendant to flexion/extension. We constructed the dynamic model of the simulator and introduced the quantitative relation between the knee rotation and the positions of insertions of hamstrings, however, the model did not worked well and could not replicate the rotation accompanying the flexion. It is prospective in future that the results could be useful to design the prosthesis of deciding the position to implant.
