Acetone-soluble and diethyl ether-insoluble lignins were isolated from eucalyptus and steam-exploded eucalyptus by phase separation treatment using p-cresol and 72% sulfuric acid. Since less p-cresol was introduced in the lignin from steam-exploded eucalyptus, it was suggested that steam explosion enhanced condensation via benzylic positions as well as β-O-4 scission. Lignin from steam-exploded eucalyptus demonstrated higher adsorption capacity for cellulase. The cellulase is harder to be detached. However, the enzymatic activity of the cellulase was about 60% of that without steam explosion. Steam-exploded lignin may tend to adsorb more cellulase and is easier to deactivate the cellulase.
