Is Japanese unique among the world's languages, or is it not? While early typological studies stressing the universality of human languages showed that Japanese is not a "special" but a rather common type of language in terms of word order and other macro-parameters, more recent probes into the fine details of Japanese are beginning to uncover theoretically challenging phenomena that are unique to or characteristic of this language. The present paper introduces some such phenomena related to Japanese word formation including exocentric compounds of a novel type and agent-incorporating compounds, and elucidates their unique nature by comparing them with the counterparts in Chinese and Korean.
