Abstract

The current study aimed at exploring the long-term effects of supported employment (SE) and individual placement and support (IPS), using systematic review methodology. Seven academic databases were used to collect the relevant studies. Three studies (N=103) including 4-12-year follow-up periods finally met the inclusion criteria. While not every study had control groups and there were methodological problems in follow-up rates and outcome assessments, 40-70% of participants who received IPS had been employed at least once in the study periods (cumulative employment rate). The findings suggest that the IPS model, which is scrupulously tailored to hopes and needs for individuals with severe mental illness, may enable them to sustain their competitive employment for the long-term.
