The effects of temperature and aging on the performance of an A8-3 Estes model rocket engine were investigated.Thrust generated by this engine was measured using a strain gauge force sensor at different initialtemperatures (0, 25, and 35°C). Engine peak thrust and impulse were found to be increasing functions of temperature,with sensitivity coefficients of 0.022 N/K and 0.0054 Ns/K, respectively. The increase in the peak thrust isexplainable by the characteristics of pyrotechnics; however, the increase in the impulse is abnormal. This abnormalitycan be attributed to the increased exhaust gas flow from the delay charge due to the enhanced burning rateof the propellant. The effect of aging was also studied by conducting experiments using 1-, 5-, and 15-year-old A8-3model rocket engines. Impulse variation was small; however, there were large variations in the peak thrusts of theolder engines. These variations can be ascribed to cracks on the propellant surface caused by heat cycles duringlong-term propellant storage.
