Output fluctuation of photovoltaic power generation (PV) may have a negative impact on the electric power system such as excess variation of frequency when the amount of PV is increased. It is considered that storage batteries are installed to reduce output fluctuation of PV. However, storage battery has several faults in the economic point of view. In this paper, gas engines are utilized for suppressing output fluctuation of PV instead of storage battery. The ability of two types of existent gas engines (9.9kW and 350kW) is evaluated through dynamic simulation using engine dynamic model and actual PV output data. The results are as follows. 9.9kW gas engine can suppress the output fluctuation of 9.2kW PV and is used sufficiently instead of storage battery. Existent 350kW gas engine is not effective in the suppression of fluctuation. However 350kW gas engine has a potential ability to suppress the output fluctuation of 200kW PV by altering control system.
