Many women suffer from physical and mental strain caused by menstruation. This study aims to clarify the factors that affect mental health with regards to the menstruation of Japanese university students. A questionnaire including; basic demographics of the respondents, physical condition and symptoms of menstruation, social support, degree of gender acceptance, degree of self-efficacy, and abbreviated SOC (Sense of Coherence) scale was used. The CES-D (Center for Epidemiologic Studies - Depression) score was used as a marker of the degree of mental health. The respondents in this study were 397 female Japanese university students. The average age was 20.23 (SD1.56). Seventy-eight percent had their menstrual period in normal time frame (between 25 to 38 days). Nighty-four percent had normal menstruation duration (between 3 to 7 days). Fifty-seven percent answered that they had difficulty in daily life due to the menstruation ‘very much’ or ‘much’. The results indicated that menstruation duration (p=0.041), have regular menstrual period (p=0.022) indicated better mental health, while degree of difficulties in daily life due to menstruation (p<0.001) significantly correlate to poorer mental health. The result of Pearson’s correlation coefficient indicated stronger correlation between SOC (r=-.547, p<0.01), followed by self-efficacy (r=-.367, p<0.01), severity of physical discomfort caused by menstruation (r=.362, p<0.01) and degree of gender acceptance (r=-.196, p<0.01). The result of multiple linear regression analysis indicated that SOC (beta=-.399, p<0.001) is the strongest indicator of better mental health, followed by severity of discomfort (beta=.220, p<0.001), selfefficacy (beta=-.148, p=0.002), degree of gender acceptance (beta=-.099, p=0.018), and menstrual duration (beta=-.095, p=0.025). We can assume that individual social and personal disposition affects the severity of discomfort caused by menstruation, associated with mental health of female students. This is particularly true in the association of SOC to mental health. Since SOC is considered as a measurement of how positively they perceive themselves as females, regardless of the difficulties they experience during their menstruation period.
