Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the issues of information literacy in academic writing education, and to suggest the future direction of the field. Language arts textbooks and instructional materials reveal that Japanese schools from elementary level to college, including preparatory schools, have not provided students enough and appropriate guidance to integrate information to their writing. By providing consistent instruction on quotation and citation, students will better understand how to process information. It is expected that such instruction will lead students to establish their position through various viewpoints and better express their opinion.
