抄録

We have tried to develop an intraoral mini-joystick for seriously disabled people to operate electric Powered Wheelchairs (PWC), Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices, and other assistive tolls. This intraoral mini-joystick is operated by users' tongue. The mini-joystick has a three-axis force sensor and a small single force sensor. The three-axis force sensor is to detect the user's tongue motion, and the small force sensor is for confirming when the users operate. Only while the small force sensor detects the prescribed pressure, the joystick and this system will work, but in the other cases the system will stop or keep stand-by mode for the safety. To make sure the basic characteristic of this intraoral mini-joystick, the maneuverability was tested. The candidate of ten able-bodied male tried to operate the joystick to the correct direction that was given as random of eight directions. The duration and accuracy of the operation was estimated. The average duration was about 2[sec] and the accuracy was good enough to apply this system to the assistive tools. This suggests the possibility that this system would be effective as an assistive tool for severely disabled people.
