The first book exclusively treating the history of education in the Occident and written by the Japanese in Japanese language will probably be the "History of Education" vol.1, (1875), which was the Japanese translation of Hirobias' "History and Progress of Education" (1869), produced by Shigeki Nishimura, If so, it means that the study of the Occidental education history in Japan has had by now a history of three quarters of a century. According to Professor Shuhei Ishiyama, this history of study is divided into four periods: (1) translation period (1875-1892), (2) textbook period (1892-1898), (3) period of independent study (1898-1929) and (4) period of special study based on original data (from 1929 to present). This division of the history will be on the whole proper and unobjectionable. Though the third period of Ishiyama's division, namely, the period of independent study, begins with the modern History of Pedagogy (1898) written by Goro Kumagai, the most epoch-making books produced during this period of independent study will be the "European History of Education" (1906) and the "Second European History of Education" (1907), both written by Jintaro Ohse, who devoted himself to the study of the Occidental history of education, producing many writings and playing a pioneering role in this field of study. Over a period of thirty years from the time of these first books of his to his last publication of the "Modern History of Education in the Occident" in 1936, Jintaro Ohse had engaged almost exclusively in the study of the Occidental education history. These two books of his will certainly deserve the name of the first writings in the "study" of the Occidental education history in Japan both in volume and substance. Therefore, I think we can dispense with the writings produced before 0hsefs, for they may be considered as something prehistoric. Here, let us take a chronological glance into the important literature produced during the period of 40 years from the time of Ohse's first book to the termination of the Pacific War.
