In this study, we evaluated the osteogenic capability using animal model to assess the effect of implanting position on bone formation around porous apatite block. Ten-weeks-old male Japanese white rabbits were used as experimental animal. The critical-size bone defects were surgically created at the epicondyle of right and left femur, medial surface of right and left tibia, and calvarium. Porous hydroxyapatite (HAp) and carbonated HAp (CA) block were inserted in each position. After a healing period of 12 weeks, bone formation and porous apatite block conditions were analyzed by histological and micro-radiographical studies. The new bone formation was observed in both HAp and CA blocks. Although CA blocks were stable in cortical bone region, they were dissolved at bone marrow region.
