Miyazawa Kenji is the subject of biographical materials throughout the history of approved elementary school textbooks for Japanese after World War II. Without exaggeration, Miyazawa Kenji has been recognized as the most important person of that era and thus he is repeatedly the subject of biographical materials in post-war elementary school textbooks for Japanese. In my opinion, there are several reasons for this popularity. First, because his life has formulaic factors such as aspirations, difficulties, efforts, and tragedies, teachers can easily use it to model virtues and morals like self-sacrifice and love for humanity. Second, by providing his children's stories and poems in the context of his life, teachers can impress children deeply and help them improve morally. Third, teachers can then discuss the other aspects of his life such as being a researcher and a man of religious faith. Finally, teachers can, in line with the times, focus on revolt against modernization, respect for life, deep attachment for one's hometown, passion to achieve one's ideals, and other related themes. Thus, a man of virtue whose life offers a broad variety of aspects and educational meanings, Miyazawa Kenji has survived to the present time as the subject of biographical materials in textbooks, changing his portrait in a subtle way to embody a norm of each period.
