抄録

This study aims to examine the role of Community-Based Tourism (CBT) in the achievement of women's social independence in Northern Tanzania. CBT is often said to contribute to capacity building as well as to income growth and job creation. In this sense, CBT can provide some support of individuals' livelihood at the local level through its profits, and can also help women's social independence in some cases. However, most of the women involved in CBT cannot obtain enough income or job opportunities to fully support themselves. In fact, though they do receive monetary payments as well as small gifts and donations from tourists, such forms of income are insufficient and unreliable for the total subsistence of their households. Thus, CBT works as partial support toward living expenses, but the job opportunities originating from it are too limited to fully secure the livelihood of those women active within it. In conclusion, in its present form, CBT does not function well toward the achievement of women's social independence.
