Franz X. Witt (1834-1888), leader of the Cecilian Movement, aimed at reforming Catholic Church music, revived Palestrina music and Gregorian chant as well as criticized the church music of Mozart and Haydn. Witt relied heavily on the biography of Mozart, "W. A. Mozart," written by Otto Jahn (1813-1869), in criticizing Mozart's church music. However, when quoting the biography, Witt purposefully employed some of Jahn's beliefs and omitted others. In this paper, I attempt to emphasize the differences in assertions between Jahn and Witt, and make it clear how Witt adopted some of Jahn's assertions.
