Abstract

Focusing on academic libraries, this paper discusses the changing role of the librarian based on the "Summary of discussion" by the Science Information Infrastructure Working Group (2010) and the Scientific Information Committee (2013) in the Council for Science and Technology. After reviewing the current status of universities and academic libraries, we describe the new roles and the expectations required of academic librarians, considering the changes which may occur in the library of the future. It also discusses how to build the mechanisms for human resource development and securing of librarians, while introducing activities of "Innovation Center for Educational Resource" and "Department of Library Science" at Kyushu University. Finally we present the future outlook for librarians.
