We estimated the potential habitat for an introduced population of Hestina assimilis assimilis (Linnaeus) in Japan, based on climates and the potential habitat of three Celtis plants that are hosts or potential hosts. We showed that many areas in Japan had a suitable climate for H. a. assimilis. This indicates that H. a. assimilis could live in various areas of Japan where Celtis plants are found. Celtis sinensis Pers. and Celtis boninensis Koidz. preferred an artificial environment, but C. sinensis had a wide range of suitable habitat. Our results indicate that the potential habitat of H. a. assimilis in Japan is much wider than the present distribution area of the introduced population. It is necessary to perform further impact assessment on the native ecosystem and to establish appropriate management of H. a. assimilis in Japan.
