Abstract
In the late Edo Period the publishing business didn't pay as it cost much largely due to the still underdeveloped technology for bookbinding. Under the system of book bartering, however, the publishers could manage to continually produce many books without being bankrupt. With a text published in the ninth year of the Bunyu Period, here I will try to throw light on this little known economical strategy of the publishing business in the early modern times.
