Nowadays, a lot of middle-aged single women in Japan can't earn enough money to make a living. As a result, they have no other choice but to live with their parents and depend on their parents. However, as the parents get older and their health declines, middle-aged single women have to take over household chores from their mothers. Due to increased housework, they may be forced to reduce the number of work hours or leave the labor market altogether. This study investigates the relationship between the employment status and the frequency of domestic work. The sample data analyzed in this study is of women aged 35 to 54 who have never married and is taken from the Japanese General Social Surveys in 2010 and 2008. The results show that the frequency of domestic work and living with their mothers lower the possibility of middle-aged single women's full-time employment status. On the other hand, living with their fathers has no effect on the employment status. Past research has found that the negative relationship between domestic work and wages is strong for married women. The results from the current study indicate that the same holds true for unmarried women. Increasing domestic work prevents single women in their middle-aged from becoming financially independent.
