谷崎潤一郎「鍵」では、"読むこと"を通して夫も妻もそれぞれ相手が望み、また自分が望む主体へと変化する。だが、この作品の物語世界の外にいるいわゆる一般の"読者"も、やはり書かれた言葉を読むことで、ある種の主体に構成され、そしてそうなることで、"読者"は作中人物たちがとり行うゲームに必要な要素として位置づけられ、そこに参入し、結果的にであれ作中人物と共に一個の"閉域"を形づくる。この論では、作中人物間における、"読むこと"を通してのそれぞれの主体化の様相と、作品を編成する言葉のさまざまな作用を通して作品世界の外部に存在する"読者"が主体化していくその様相を検討し、それらが担う意味合いに関して考察する。

The plot of Junichiro Tanizaki's Kagi is centered on the acts of "reading" not only because both the husband and his wife in the story fashion themselves by reading each other but also because the reader fashions his or her own self by reading the text. In this sense, the reader is caught in the repetition compulsion of what the readers in the text are doing and forced to take part in the game of reading. Thus tracing the process of self-fashioning in the text is also tracing the way the reader is making his or her own self precisely by reading the self-making of the characters.
