Abstract

Several communication protocols exist in 920MHz band wireless system which is noted for a use of M2M services. In order to accommodate M2M devices of different communication protocols, it is necessary to install multiple access points corresponding to different communication protocol which can result in an increase of installation costs. In this paper we propose a system with a single 920MHz band wireless USB dongle, which can handle multiple communication protocols, in order to eliminate extra installation costs. In order to provide simple means for scalability, upgrade and support a new communication protocol, functions common to different protocols were placed in the dongle, while protocol-dependent functions were placed in the cloud server. In this system, USB/IP was applied so that the dongle could virtually connect to the cloud server. We solved the problem of increased network load due to protocol separation and usage of USB/IP, by implementing packet aggregation method and evaluated its overall effectiveness.
