Abstract

Difficulty of morning awakening (DMA), which shows the sleep offset problem, is not classified as one of the category of sleep disorders despite sleep onset insomnia is classified as the major category. However, DMA shows several characteristic symptoms and provides lots of psychosocial difficulties so that we propose that DMA should be studied in detail. We treated twelve DMA patients by self-awakening hypnotherapy. As a result, seven patients can awake in a desirable time. In our another study, 7 out of 14 DMA patients with ADHD recovered by atomoxetine medication. We hypothesize that morning awakening behavior is affected by maintenance of attention, which may be regulated by several dopamine agonistic medication.
