Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) isolated from green tea is known to show various pharmacological effects. Nevertheless, its application in regenerative medicine has been limited due to its poor chemical reaction to other substances. Here we demonstrated that the EGCG-binding gelatin (EGCG-Gel) prepared in the aqueous chemical synthesis facilitated bone formation in the critical size defect of mouse calvaria. The EGCG-Gel induced osteogenic differentiation to mouse mesenchymal stem cell line (D1 cell). These results indicated that EGCG-Gels containing adequate amount of EGCG is likely to be a prospective bone substitute material.
