Abstract

Feasibility on a new principle gas compressor (or pump) has been studied. The newly proposed compressor operates by sound radiation pressure between the opposite plane and the radiation surface which is oscillated with ultrasonic frequency. The compressor is composed of a vibrator and a cavity chamber with a through hole. It is expected that the proposed compressor can be small in size, long in life and silent, because it has very simple structure and does not have any tribological part. The experimental investigation has been carried out to verify the fundamental characteristics of the proposed compressor. The results show that the pressure occurred in the chamber is in inverse proportion to the gap distance and is nearly in proportion to the vibration amplitude of the radiation surface. It is also shown that the flow rate is in proportion to the pressure in the chamber and the area of the hole.
