Recently, die application of composite materials such as CFRP is expanding to die main structure of aircrafts. Since low conductivity compared to conventional metal materials, CFRP can be subjected large lightning damage. In the present study, we conduct the experiments and coupled thermal-electrical analysis to investigate the damage mechanism of CFRP under artificial lightning damage. In the experiments, the artificial lightning, tests were performed on CFRP plates. As a result, the large fiber breakage in the fiber direction, and a gasification area of the resin in the fiber transverse direction were observed. In the analysis, we constructed simulation model taking into account of the dielectric breakdown of the resin. As a result, the spread in a circle around the point of application of lightning area is 300℃ thermal decomposition temperature of the resin. Therefore, the temperature rise of both the fiber direction and the fiber orthogonal direction, cause gasification of the resin. In addition, it has been estimated in the fiber direction the fiber is lifted by gasification in the layer of the resin, and the damage spreads.
