In a search on kenaf as a paper making raw material for developing industrial plant resources, a practical kenaf cultivation trial was conducted in a Japanese mountainous village. Physical properties of the kenaf plant such as moisture content, weight percentage of leaf to stem, harvested yield and chemical compositions were found and changed regularly together during the growing period. Kenaf compositional characteristics and pulping properties were investigated dureing different growth stage. The maximum whole stalk yield of kenaf was more than 15 tons (oven dried weight) per hectare for the late maturity variety in this trial. Kraft pulp quality of kenaf whole stalk will be compared with that of commercial wood kraft pulp. However, pulp quality showed to be greatly influenced by cultivation practices including variety, plant population and harvesting time. A model cultivation of kenaf for whole stalk kraft pulping raw material was demonstrated for the optimum maturity period, population densities and harvesting time between October and November. Normal pressure pulping of the bast fiber also showed the feasibility to produce the promising pulp as a raw material for handmade paper making.
