When evaluating riding comfort of vehicles, sometimes human dummy developed by spring-mass-damper system is used to avoid individual variation. However, because human body is continuum, such kind of dummies cannot completely represent vibration characteristic of human body. Therefore, in this paper, to represent vibration characteristic of human body as continuum, new types of dummy developed by soft structure filled with fluid, which are defined as aqua dummy, are contrived and as the first step, vibration characteristic, especially apparent mass, of the dummy is examined by simulation and experiment. In the simulation, the effects of parameters of structure and fluid on dummy's vibration characteristic are calculated by two dimension model, and it is found that the parameters of structure, not fluid, have a big influence on dummy's vibration characteristic. Additionally, the simulation reveals a problem of the aqua dummy as human dummy that apparent mass increases in higher frequency than anti-resonance frequency. On the other hand, from the result of the experiment, it is found that the increase of apparent mass in higher frequency than anti-resonance frequency is smaller than expected by simulation. In conclusion, aqua dummy is found to be a hopeful human dummy.
