The purpose of this study is to improve the dynamic characteristics and the stability of the journal bearings by using the surface texturing. In the present work, the characteristics of the journal bearings with square-holes were analyzed numerically using the finite difference method. Reynolds equation is employed as a governing equation for the pressure distribution in the bearing clearance. In the present study, the effects of square-hole pattern on the dynamic characteristics were investigated by mainly changing the location of holes in the circumferential direction. It is found that the dynamic characteristics and the stability would be improved, when square-holes are located around the end of lubrication film.
