A theoretical study is carried out to investigate the effects of square-hole pattern formed in seal stator surface on the static and dynamic characteristics of liquid annular seals for optimum design of the square-hole pattern. Various types of square-hole pattern are examined by changing the number of holes, N_d, cross-sectional area of hole, S_d, and combinations of N_d and S_d under a constant value of total cross-sectional area of holes, A_d. The numerical results show that the square-hole patterns with larger N_d, and those with combinations of larger N_d and smaller S_d under a constant A_d yield a lower axial leakage flow rate and smaller quantitative effect of inlet swirl velocity on the whirl-frequency ratio than conventional smooth surface seals. This is expected since these hole-patterns have a larger total sidewall surface area of holes, providing a higher energy loss to the flow passage across the clearance steps between land and hole regions. These phenomena would contribute to improving the efficiency and stability margin of pumps.
