Vortex-induced vibration of an elastically supported structure in a uniform flow is affected by many factors of the structure. Their effects on the phenomena however have not been investigated completely yet. In this paper, the vortex-induced vibration of a circular cylinder supported by cantilever beams is studied under a uniform air flow. A wire is installed to the support mechanism to add a nonlinear restoring force property. To investigate the effect of damping forces of the structure on the vortex-induced vibration, the damping force of the system is changed by the velocity feedback using electromagnets as actuators. Experiments are conducted in wide range of flow speed to investigate the nonlinear property of the vibration. Numerical simulations are also conducted using a wake oscillator model with acceleration coupling. Simulation results show the typical nonlinearity in the model, and the validity of the analytical model is discussed by comparing with the experimental results.
