The purpose of this study was to clarify possible movement patterns achieved by a mousepiece orthodontic appliance without attachments. In cases where an upper right central incisor was translated or rotated by about 0.1 mm, orthodontic tooth movements were simulated by the finite element method. Axial rotation of the incisor was almost achieved. The incisor could move bodily in the labial direction by about half of the predicted distance. In the case of menial translation, the crown moved to the predicted position but the root apex hardly moved. Slight intrusion of the incisor was achieved, but extrusion was almost impossible.
