- J101024 Numerical Analysis of Static and Dynamic Characteristics of Annular Liquid Seals with Square-Hole Pattern

The theoretical study is carried out to investigate the effects of the inlet swirl velocity on the static and dynamic characteristics of the liquid annular seal with a square-hole pattern in the seal stator for various rotor-spinning velocities. The momentum equations with turbulent coefficients and the continuity equation, which are averaged across the film thickness, are numerically solved in consideration of the pressure jumps at each step between the land and the square-hole regions. The numerical results show that the inlet swirl velocity influences mainly the cross-coupled stiffness and dynamic coefficients and the whirl-frequency ratio, whose magnitudes increase with the inlet swirl velocity in the same direction of rotor spinning. The square-hole pattern seal however has smaller quantitative effects of the inlet swirl velocity on these dynamic characteristics than the annular plain seal with the smooth surface and the parallel-grooved seal due to a higher resistance to the circumferential flow.
