In using a biogas as fuel of SI-engine, it was found that decreasing the combustion duration is necessary to increase the gross indicated thermal efficiency.A diesel based SI-engine which has the compact bowl-in-piston chamber was used to decrease the combustion duration by strong squish motion. Two kinds of piston and two kinds of compression ratio were employed to investigate the effect of squish motion and compression ratio on combustion. In the condition using CH_4 as fuel, at higher equivalence ratio, ISFC_g was less for the low squish piston. At leaner condition, ISFC_g decreased with the normal piston. The lowest ISFC_g was about 180 g/kWh using the low squish piston at the equivalence ratio of 0.6 with H_2 substitution.
