This paper studies diachronic migration of the cognitive strategic group when managers focus on various dominant resources in an industry in a changing competitive environment. In this paper, a strategic group is defined as a group of firms with certain strategic commonality in an industry. A cognitive strategic group is a mental subsistent of the managers of these firms.
The case of Japanese Internet Service Providers is used to explain certain grounds for actuality in the cognitive strategic group. We expound on the concept wherein the cognitive strategic group acts as a reference point for rivalries that may influence competitive behavior. This study conducts a qualitative analysis of managers’ interviews, and finds that a behavioral-based cognitive strategic group (BBSG) is generated aside from a resource-based cognitive strategic group (RBSG) through competitive referencing by managers. This leads to the creation of a new RBSG that sees shared cognition of competitiveness among industry members. Throughout this analysis, we propose generalized propositions that advocate subjective realism in strategic group theory.
Given that few works on cognitive strategic group theory argue group dynamics and membership transfers, this study sheds light upon the migration of strategic group through strategic reference and interrelation between the RBSG and the BBSG.
