The Irish Republican Brotherhood( I.R.B.) established in 1858, started risings in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Tipperary. This paper examines the rising in Cork City and County Cork. In terms of their known activities on the night set for the rising, the Cork Fenians can be classified into four elements. First, a large force of Fenians, which assembled outside the city and was going to Mallow, attacked the police barrack at Ballyknockane. Secondly, a group, consisted mainly of Midleton Fenians led by Timothy Daly, attacked the police barrack at Castlemartyr. Thirdly, a group under the leadership of Captain John McClure attacked the coastguard station at Knockadoon and aimed to cooperate with the Midleton Fenians. A fourth element was the Charleville Fenians commanded by Captain John Dunne: they attacked the police barrack at Kilmallock with Fenians in Limerick.
