As railway rolling stock is expensive, it is necessary to utilize them efficiently. Making rolling stock schedule (RSS) is one of processes in the planning phase. RSS is a sequence of daily schedules. A daily schedule is a sequence of train services for a train set. RSS is made so as to satisfy maintenance conditions and to use each train set equally. On the other hand, rolling stock assignment (RSA) is also needed. RSA is to assign train sets to daily schedules which may be different from the ones RSS supposes so as to satisfy the maintenance constraints when a certain train set(s) may violate them if the train set follows the RSS. It often occurs in lines in which there are differences between the timetable on which RSS is based and actual daily timetables for extra train services. In this paper, we formulate the problem of rolling stock assignment into a network problem and propose a solution method by column generation.
