In the present study, the static characteristics (leakage flowrate, static pressure and fluid velocities) and dynamic characteristics (dynamic coefficients and whirl frequency ratio) of the helically grooved seals are numerically investigated for various rotor spinning velocity and groove dimensions. A pressure distribution and fluid velocities are calculated by using Navier-Stokes equation and considering of energy loss as the fluid passed through the grooves. A numerical results show that the leakage flowrate decreases with the increase of the rotor spinning velocity in helically grooved seals, and the tendency becomes more marked with increasing the number of thread grooves and the groove depth. The cross-coupled stiffness coefficient Kc and whirl frequency ratio WFR of the helically grooved seals are smaller than those of the smooth seals. The values of Kc and WFR decrease with increasing the number of thread grooves and groove depth. Those results suggest that the helical grooves contribute to the rotor stability from the viewpoint of suppressing the rotor whirling motion.
