How to estimate the optimum volume of the front-pond at a pump station is afundamental but unresolved problem in the optimum design of drainage systems.The role of the front-pond to regulate the difference between the rates of inflowand outflow through pump station and to mitigate the intermittent pump operation, is being more important to cope with the increase of pumping capacity caused byurbanization or conversion of paddy field to upland field in a low-lying basin.This paper deals with the optimal design of front-pond volume considering twocomponents VF and VR. In which VF is the maximum volume to be stored beforepump operation, and VR is the allowable maximum volume to be stored after pumpoperation. These volumes are discussed using mass-curves for inflow and outflowto propose a simple method under the condition of non-intermittent pump operation.This method is examined using hydrographs obtained by applying the mathematicalmodels of kinematic wave for non-inundated area and dynamic wave for inundatedarea.As the result, it has been proved that it is almost impossible to completelyprevent intermittent pump operation for all hydrographs of various scales and theintermittent pump operation containing a proper rest time must be allowed.
