Abstract
Cerium-containing oxide fluoride glasses CeF_3-BaF_2-AlF_3-SiO_2 were prepared under COand Ar atmospheres. The glass prepared in CO exhibited blue emission under UV irradiation. Peakanalyzes were performed to investigate their optical properties. The emission spectra wereseparable into three peak components by peak analysis. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS)spectra were measured to investigate the valency of the elements in the glass. Oxygen and fluorinein the glasses were more covalent and ionic than those in simple oxide and fluoride compounds. The cerium ion in the glass prepared in CO might be under a cationic condition whereas that in Armight be under an anionic condition.
