The purpose of this study was to explore the practical wisdom used by a special education teacher to facilitate positive participation of a group of students with autism in social interactions occurring in various problem solving processes in play and drama classes. Three video-taped lessons were selected for the analyses. The frequency of social initiations and responses occurring in the problem-solving processes was computed in each lesson. The frequency was further analyzed in relation to the theme of the lesson, the problem to be solved, and the teacher's behaviors. The results indicated that positive social interactions in problem-solving processes was associated with predictability of the activities, congruence between what the teacher wants his students to solve and what the students wants to solve, and facilitative ways of the teacher's interactions.
