Trialkylsulfonium Fluorohydrogenate Giving the Highest Conductivity in Room Temperature Ionic Liquids

Synthesis and characterization of tertiary sulfonium fluorohydrogenate ionic liquids (trimethylsulfonium(S111[+]),dimethylethylsulfonium(S112[+]), diethylmethylsulfonium (S122[+]), and triethylsulfonium (S222[+])) are reported. The vacuum–stable HF composition in the anion differs, depending on the cationic structure (S111(FH)1.9F, S112(FH)2.0F, S122(FH)2.0F, and S222(FH)2.0F). The highest ionic conductivity at 298 K is observed for S111(FH)1.9F (131 mS cm[−1]) and ionic conductivity decreases in the order of S111(FH)1.9F > S112(FH)2.0F (111 mS cm[−1]) > S122(FH)2.0F (91 mS cm[−1]) > S222(FH)2.0F (83 mS cm[−1]). Electrochemical windows of S111(FH)1.9F, S112(FH)2.0F, S122(FH)2.0F, and S222(FH)2.0F are 4.09, 4.20, 4.37 and 4.93 V, respectively.
