Abstract

The purposes of this paper are to detect changes in the pattern of financial intermediation through the flow of funds data in Korea, Taiwan and Thailand, and to examine how these changes influence the finance-real linkages. The patterns of financial intermediation have changed since 2000 in East Asia. In the 1990s, they had two aspects: bank centred financial system and corporate focused lending. However, since the 2000s, banks have changed from corporate focused lending to household focused lending. We find financial disintermediation in the business sector and financial diversification in the individual and business sectors. We also find that the process of these changes vary among economies. While these changes might weaker financial-real linkage through the bank lending channel, they might enhance the linkage through the interest rate channel.
