Firstly, the tendency for listening to music and conducting musical activities, which has been defined as,purposefulness and motivation for musical activities, including the tendency to sing while listening to music (Yoshimura and Miyatani, 2003) was investigated. Secondly, the association between specialized participation in music by professionally learning music and joining musical groups and the tendency for listening to music and conducting musical activities was examined. Thirdly, the association between emotion focused coping and the tendency for listening to music and conducting musical activities was investigated. A questionnaire was administered to university students (N = 185, 81 men and 104 women). Factor analysis of the responses identified three factors related to the tendency for listening to music and conducting musical activities: Dejection, Changing and Feeling fine. T-tests indicated that specialized participation in music resulted in listening to music depending on feelings and overall musical activities. A two-factor analysis of variance conducted on emotion focused coping indicated a relationship between the overall tendency for listening to music and conducting musical activities and Feeling fine.
