What we look at in Early Medieval Rome? There are splendid churches built by Pope Paschal I, old icons of the Virgin, many chapels and shrines of saints and a lot of faithful from all over the world. This paper looks on recent exhibitions at Rome and well-educated guide books at first. Important colloquiums on Medieval Rome were held around the year 2000 and we can grasp trends and interest on this field. We find a lot of important studies on holy beings, especially icons and saints relics. The method of cultural studies influenced on researches and exhibitions of Medieval Roman art.

本稿は，ラテン世界の中心でありながら，他の地域とは一線を画す中世ローマの美術につて，近年いかなる視点から検討されてきたかを展望する。鍵となるトピックとして，イコンと聖人或いは聖遺物崇敬に特に着目する。
