Like other Indo-European languages, Italian has a grammatical category called “relative pronouns”, which contains the ones whose equivalents are found in other Romance lagunages or English and the one which is considered to be peculiar to Italian. Among the “relative pronouns”, three elements, “che”, “il quale”, and “cui”, are always used accompanied by their antecedent. In this article, after presenting their distribution, we analyse the syntactic properties of the three above-mentioned “relative pronouns” in the framework of generative grammar. The element “che”, which has been called a relative pronoun in the traditional grammar, is analyzed as a complementizer, with the empty operator OP functioning as a relative pronoun in the relative clause where “che” appears. The element “il quale” functions as a relative pronoun like “which” in English. The element “cui”, characteristic of Italian, is analyzed as a prepositional phrase whose head is an empty preposition taking “cui” as its complement. This analysis, along with the assumption of a feature [+modifier] establishing the syntactic linking between a relative clause and its antecedent noun phrase, enables us to explain the differences of the syntactic properties of the three elements in a principle-based manner.
