紀要論文

The purpose of this paper is to introduce how loanwords were put down in writing in the Taisho \ period. Ten types of notation of loanwords consisting of a combination of kanji, katakana, hiragana \ and alphabet were observed in twenty-four volumes of general magazines published by Chuoukoron-\ sha, Chuou Koron and Fujin Koron. Out of ten types of the notation of loanwords, both these magazines \ had eight in common despite having had different writers, readers and ways of writing ruby character \ (small hiragana or katakana above the character).\ The two major findings of the research are as follows. (1) The most frequently found form was \ katakana only, though the suitable notations depend on each semantic field of proper nouns and \ frequency in use of common nouns. (2) The notational styles of loanwords gradually shifted from \ kanji to kana from the middle of the Taisho period. Both (1) and (2) show katakana is useful for the \ writing of loanwords. These findings are in accordance with the then trend to simplify the notational \ systems. So it can be said that the notational style of loanwords late in the Taisho period underwent a \ simplification process from kanji to katakana.
