超重症児に対する療育支援に関する研究は、報告内容により、「指導者による支援と事例の行動変化との間に対応が認められた群」と、「指導者による支援と事例の行動変化との対応関係が必ずしも明確ではない群」とに大別された。前者は、指導者が濃厚な医療的管理下にあるという超重症児特有の問題に配慮さえすれば、支援が十分に可能であることが示唆された。一方で、後者は気管切開や人工呼吸器管理下にあるなど、呼吸機能に重篤な障害を有する超重症児であり、現時点では、彼らへの療育支援方略および客観的な評価方法の構築が十分になされているとは言いがたい状況であった。それでもいくつかの実践報告から、彼らへの支援が着実に試みられ、行動変化が見出されていたことが確認された。今後、そうした実践のさらなる蓄積とともに、彼らのきわめて微弱な動きを実証的に捉えうる手法(例えば、心拍や脳波、NIRSのような脳機能イメージングなど)も必要に応じて活用すべきであると考えられた。

We recently reviewed the research over the past five years concerning children with profound multiple disabilities (PMD) who need special health care. As a result, we found many with respiratory function difficulties. Moreover, the respiratory infection had to be treated in numerous cases. However, little research has been done on their care and education. We should consider their life environment, their respiratory and sensory functions. We must think more about the ideal way of care and education.
