In this age of globalization, the need for individuals in Japan who have high communicative English skills has increased. At the same time, Japanese people are also very concerned with polite usage when using English. In fact, to communicate effectively and form good human relationships, attaining knowledge of the linguistic nuances of politeness in English can be beneficial. In this article, the author has selected four grammar items and will introduce a teaching approach that centers on the mechanism of polite usage, employing theories from the fields of semantics, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics to teach them. The author will demonstrate how this teaching approach, focusing on the principles of polite usage, serves to work as a bridge between the English content learned in typical Japanese high school classes and that which is needed for communication in the real world.
