抄録

Major theories on narcissism and naricissistic personality disorder were reviewed. Kernberg's theory on pathological narcissism and Kohut's theory on narcissistic personality disorder were among them. 　The important aspects of naricissistic disorder were discussed on the basis of Kohut's theory. The following points were suggested. 　Such features as grandiosity, self-absorption, and lack of empathy have been emphasized as characteristics of narcissistic personality, but we must give an equal attention to velnerability, emptiness, and depression which are caused by deficits of psychic structures relieving anxiety and maintaining self-esteem. Persons with such velnerability of structures are inclined to seek for soothing and approval from external objects, in order to maintain psychic equilibirium and to protect themselves against self-fragmentation.
