Abstract

Terminal care involves counseling and palliation to reduce pain and bring peace to dying people. Previous research and practice of terminal care derive largely from Christian or Buddhist standpoints. Japan cannot simply copy foreign practices because they involve such cultural and religious worldviews. Japanese views of life and death include many Shinto elements, yet no one has studied the possibility of Shinto priests engaging in terminal care. From literature and original interviews demonstrating how Shinto priests already engage in medicine and welfare, this study suggests the possibility of their further involvement in terminal care.
