This article is both a verification of the possibility of application of the conceptual model for description of copied materials (hereafter, “this model”) through looking at how the materials held by the institutes where non-National Museum of Japanese History researchers in this joint study were based were described by this model, and a consideration of the features and issues of this model. The targets for description were the copied materials of the Shimazu Family Documents (Shimazu-ke Monjo) in a volume edited by the University of Tokyo Historiographical Institute, the Shorin-zu Byobu screens in the Tokyo National Museum, and the “Uzebek Tribesman Hat” and videotape programs held by the National Museum of Ethnology. The biggest differences this model has with the framework of existing information descriptions are the strong emphasis on the copying process and management that does not distinguish between analogue and digital. In terms of descriptions of information resources, there is a large amount of research that focuses on just how detailed the descriptions of the target can be; however, this study was not about increasing detail, but only about managing the variety of copied materials. In addition, in contrast to the previous handling of analogue with analogue, digital with digital, in this model analogue and digital are not separated. This is a framework that while seems likely to have been used before, was in fact not, and overall the focus on its practical working aspects for object management in museums is its principal feature. When we tried to describe it in actual practice using the conceptual model, all materials were able to be readily described, and this model was shown to have high application potential. However, there were a few problems as well. The first is the issue of operation. The motivation for constructing this model was to actually use it in managing copied materials, but merely describing the metadata made it hard to grasp the connections between copied materials, and so a separate copy management system appears to be needed. The second issue is about the metadata, and in particular study is required on whether to recognize element expansion. The third is its limits as a model; or in other words, how far the complexity of the copy can be supported.
